Musicianship

I am an active musician and composer. As a guitarist, bassist, and drummer/percussionist, I play a variety of musics, mostly American vernacular music (rock, pop, hip-hop) and world music—I am also a trained classical guitarist. As a composer, I synthesize common-practice, popular, and world musics, especially focusing on sophisticated rhythm and tempo relationships.

At UCSC, I studied a variety of world musics with ethnomusicologists Tanya Merchant (central Asian music), Dard Neuman (Hindustani music), Linda Burman-Hall (Indonesian music), and played with the Sundanese Gamelan ensembles under Undang Sumarna. I have ample practical experience arranging for jazz, pop/rock, and fusion ensembles, and studied classical and contemporary orchestration with composer Hi Kyung Kim. I also have extensive experience with professional audio recording and sound design hardware and software: I worked as a recording engineer in UCSC's recording studio, produced numerous live performances throughout Santa Cruz county, and am currently teaching Georgia Tech's primary courses in recording engineering and live sound reinforcement.
